Camp oven cooking is easy when travelling in camper vans in Australia

If travelling for at least a couple of weeks in camper vans in Australia, and you are looking to freedom camp, consider purchasing a camp oven (dutch oven) from a local department store.  For some, this will be a new experience which will really add to your holiday memories.

Travelling Camper vans, Australia

Travelling Camper vans, Australia

  • These can be found relatively ‘cheap’ in Australia in department stores at around the AU$40 mark.  Stores like ‘Big W’ usually have these in the camping section.  Camp ovens do range in price and quality.
  • If planning on freedom camping in camper vans in Australia, you’ll find many allow camp fires.  If you’ve never cooked your dinner over the fire in a camp oven before, you’ll enjoy this experience
  • Can pretty much cook anything in a camp oven that you can cook in your regular oven, with roasts and stews being popular.  The lid can be doubled as a fry pan.

Cooking in the Camp Oven when travelling in camper vans in Australia

  1. Always heat the camp oven in the fire prior to cooking
  2. If roasting or baking in the camp oven, take a few hot coals from the main fire and place the oven on top of these, and then sprinkle a few more on the lid of the camp oven.  Keep adding more hot coals throughout the cooking process
  3. If you are cooking something that requires more browing, then add a lot more coals to the middle of the lid to provide concentrated heat
  4. You can even bake a cake, in the camp oven.  If you are doing this, place a trivet or cake rack inside the camp oven – these can be found whereever you buy campovens.  This allows the heat to circulate around the cake and saves getting a burnt bottom to the cake
  5. Travelling in Camper Vans Australia

    Travelling in Camper Vans Australia

Its a great idea, to make lots of hot coals in the fire, prior to starting to cook.  The type of wood will also dennote how often more coals need to be added to the camp oven

  6. While you will need to check your food as it is cooking, try not to excessively lift the lid, as the hot air escapes.  Damber or bread should be checked after 20 minutes, and generally a roast every 30 – 40 minutes
  7. Following cooking, after taking the food out, place the camp oven upside down in the fire and the remaining food scraps will burn out.  Take care to ensure you do not get any sand or dirt inside the campoven, or you will regret it next time you cook.

Its amazing how many things can be cooked in a camp oven, and while camper vans in Australia do have a full kitchen, for some, travellers prefer this type of cooking; not only for the experience, but prevents the ‘bedroom’ smelling like the dinner you just enjoyed.

Motorhome Hire in Australia and Travelling with Children

We are often asked if motorhome hire in Australia are suitable for families with young children.  Our answer is yes, this is a great way to have an adventure with your family, but take the time to hire a motorhome that is best suited to your family’s needs.  The perfect motorhome hire will ensure your family can get out and really enjoy what Australia has to offer.  It’s eay to camp without roughing it.

Motorhome Hire Australia

Motorhome Hire Australia

Like many families, you’ll find a motorhome hire is an excellent way to introduce your children to the outdoors and exploring Australia.  Hiring a motorhome gives you the flexibility of exploring different corners of Australia easily.  It also saves the storage of a caravan or motorhome for the remainder of the year when you are unable to get away because of busy family life – or the financial commitment of owning such a luxury item!  Have a  chat to us about the costs of campervan hire or motorhome rental for your specific travel dates.

Most families will prefer to hire a motorhome with an on board toilet and shower for added comfort and convenience.  Generally families hire a 4, 5 or 6 berth motorhome.  The number of berths indicates how many passenger can be seated and how many can sleep in the motorhome.

Motorhome Hire Australia

  • Even though babies may not require much sleeping space, they will still need a seat and anchor point for their baby seat, so ensure your motorhome is large enough.

When we speak with you, we’ll ask about your children’s ages to ensure the vehicle we recommend has enough anchor points for any child or baby seats that are required.  Child and baby seats are available with your motorhome hire in Australia, and is often easier the seats than bring your own.  We can also put together some great packages which bundle up extras including the cost of child seats which can really save you some money

Not only does the number of people travelling dictate the best motorhome, but also your need for ‘space’.  Some of our four berth motorhomes are in the size of a six berth motorhome which are a good option for those that appreciate a little extra space

Motorhome Hire Australia

We even have a special six berth motorhome which is perfect for a family travelling together.  The children sit just behind the front seats in the driving ‘cab’.  The benefit of this motorhome is that the baby and child seats do not need to be moved each evening to make up the bed.  The seats can be quite bulky so saves juggling things around each evening when it is time to put the children to bed.

The awning available with most motorhomes, and camping table and chairs will be beneficial if you are trying to get younger children to sleep before the older ones.  The outdoor area gives you in effect another living area and a little more space when living and sleeping in the same area.

Having an on board kitchen is also a great way to save money while on the road.  Meals can easily be made and continue to be as healthy as or no more expensive than when you are at home.  Our specifications for the vehicles tell you important details like how many burners your stove has, whether your motorhome has a grill and the size of the refrigerator to assist your trip planning

Along your travels, depending where you are exploring, you’ll usually find plenty of rest areas to pull over.  Not only a great opportunity for a coffee break but will also give the children the opportunity to have a run around.  Some of the motorhomes also have a DVD player which is operational while the vehicle is moving to keep children entertained also.

Camper Vans and Insurance Excess

It can be quite a confusing process when you first start looking into renting camper vans in Australia.  Each company seems to have different way of calculating the rates and inclusions, which of course can affect the bottom line and holiday experience.  Then there is this business of trying to understand the insurance excess.

Camper vans are perfect for exploring Tasmania

Camper vans are perfect for exploring Tasmania

At Gallivanting Oz we use a number of suppliers to ensure we can match the right vehicle to your needs.  There is no extra cost for dealing with us, however you’ll benefit from our service and experience.  Bookings for camper vans are made directly through us.

The benefit of this is we do understand which vehicle will be the best camper van for your holiday based on what you are looking.  Our point of difference is the service that we can offer you – not only do we know the vehicles, we also know Australia.  There’s a pretty high chance that at least someone in our office has been where you are planning to explore.

One of the questions we are often asked by clients looking to rent camper vans is regarding insurance excess.  The standard rates that you may have noticed quoted have a fairly high excess (liability) which can range from AU$1000 – AU$7500 depending on the supplier and age of the vehicle.

This liability can be reduced by paying a higher daily rate, or we can arrange an ‘inclusive package’ with all of our suppliers.  This simply means that you ‘bundle’ extras, along with the $0 excess insurance into the hire which saves you money and also provides peace of mind travel.  Each of the different suppliers offers different inclusions, so important to check this for best value for money.

Most of our clients do prefer to have peace of mind travel and do take the Nil Excess when they rent camper vans.

For those that do decide they would prefer a lower daily rate and assume the risk there is a down side.  The amount of the insurance excess is charged to their credit card at the time of pick up.  For a lot of people AU$7500 is higher than their credit card limit, so thought needs to be given if this really is the right option.  For our international clients there is also an exchange rate risk that needs to be taken into consideration with some of our suppliers.

There is another option for those that are willing to take some of the risk, and that is to partly reduce the insurance excess or liability.  There is a higher daily rate charge to do this, but the cost is less than reducing to $0 excess.  Usually this option reduces the excess to about half of what it was originally, and again this needs to be charged to the credit card at time of pick up.

Considering 4WD Hire or a 4WD Camper?

4WD Hire

4WD Hire

Planning on exploring a little off the beaten track when you come to Australia?  If that is the case, then you may be interested in 4WD Hire, or even a 4WD Camper which you can sleep in.  Most 2WD campervan and motorhome hire companies in Australia only allow a minimal distance to be travelled on unsealed roads without breaching the contract.  Please speak with us if you’d like more information regarding restrictions on 2WD campervan hire or motorhome rental on unsealed roads.

While there is plenty to see on the sealed roads in Australia, in fact you can easily go around all of Australia without having to go on an unsealed road, for some, exploring side roads is part of the adventure.

A 4WD Hire or a 4WD Camper gives you the freedom of exploring where you’d like to go.  4WD hires, come in a variety of vehicles and styles to suit pretty much every traveller.

What’s best for me?

Depending on the number of people you want to travel in the 4WD Hire, may narrow down the choices.

If you are three or more persons, or a family we have a few options:

  • You could consider one of our new Outback Campers, which has  a ‘pop top’ roof for an extra bed.  The four passengers travel together in the twin cab, and with the benefit of the Camper at the back, cooking will be a breeze.
  • We also have a larger 4WD hire that can also come with a tent.  The downside is that the tent will need to be pitched each night, however on the upside you will all be able to travel together in the one vehicle – these options can transport up to five adults
  • We also have a 4WD Troopie Hire which has a roof tent.  Two passengers can sleep in the roof tent, with the remaining staying in a tent on the ground.  This vehicle also has an electric fridge, so perfect for a family or group of friends.

If you are a couple wanting to explore Australia, you could consider the above or these other 4WD campers for hire

4WD Camper

4WD Camper

  • We have 4WD Campers which have a fibreglass hi top.  These are perfect for getting off the beaten track, but not suitable for heavy 4WD tracks
  • Another option which is a good use of space, is the 4WD Camper with a pop top.  In a matter of seconds you’ll have the roof popped to give standing room inside, complete with fly screens for good ventilation
  • We have the 4WD Troopie for hire with the roof tent, available for two people travelling (more storage in the rear of the vehicle) which is a popular choice with some

  • If you are planning on really exploring many 4WD tracks in outback Australia, we even have a 4WD Hire that will suit you

Toilet/Shower

4WD Campers do not have a toilet built into the vehicle.  For some who like to freedom camp, you may like to consider our portable camping toilet, (dry toilet) which is part of our Galli Ensuite.  This adds extra comfort and the ability to stay and some stunning out of the way locations which do not have toilet/shower facilities provided.  Speak to us for more information.

Where do you want to go?

Some thought also needs to be given as to where you would like to explore.  There are many popular 4WD tracks that really get into the outback or wilderness of Australia, however some of these become impassable in certain weather conditions.  Because of this, some of these tracks are restricted at certain times of the year, or they may even be prohibited for some 4WD vehicles.

The best idea if you want to explore these types of tracks is to speak with us, so we can recommend and organise for you the right 4WD Hire or 4WD camper for your adventure.  You may also be interested in an information blog about insurance excess and how this affects the rental of camper vans

Travelling on a Budget? – Hire a camper van

Just because you are on a budget, doesn’t mean you can’t explore what Australia has to offer.  Many people, just like you hire a camper van and have an amazing time.

Some people wonder if there are only small vehicles available when they hire a camper van in Australia.

This is not the case at all, they vary do vary from smaller vehicles all the way up to a 6 berth camper van available for hire with an on board toilet and shower.  You may be interested in finding our more about 4WD Hire or even a 4WD Camper.

The older vehicles are only an average age of 2 – 5 years, and come complete, just like our newer vehicles, with 24 hour roadside assistance.  If you don’t mind the vehicle being a little older, then this could be a great option for you.

The camper van that you hire comes complete with an on board kitchen including crockery etc, which means you’ll save even more money on your adventure as you can cook your own meals.  A great way to save a few more dollars is to purchase local produce when it is in season.  As you drive along the road in your camper van, you’ll see road side stalls packed with delicious fruit and veges from the local farmers in many locations.  You’ll know that it is fresh and of course you’ll be supporting the local community as well.

Another great bonus if you hire a camper van is that your bed is with you all the time.  No big panic near the end of the day to find a low cost motel, it’s simply a matter of pulling into one of the thousands of campgrounds throughout Australia.

Hire a camper van with an on board toilet and shower so you can freedom camp.

Freedom camping, simply means staying in free or low cost camping grounds throughout Australia.  There are about 3000 of these places which have limited or no facilities that you can park for the night.  Hire a camper van with facilities and you will be able to make the most of these locations and save a few more dollars.

Top tips for travelling Australia with Motorhomes for hire

Considering a motorhome adventure in Australia?

Contemplating exploring the ‘real’ Australia, away from the bright city lights and theme parks?

Motorhomes are available for hire with us, with these tips getting you started:

1.       Time of year

  • Travelling May to September is generally the best time to travel the northern half of the country with cooler temperatures and less rain than the summer.  The ‘wet season’ can often cause disruption to travel plans and the heat is unbearable for some
  • Travelling June to August in southern Australia can be cold
  • Motorhomes for hire have rental rates varying considerably and are more expensive in peak travel times.   If you are flexible with holiday dates, consider travelling outside of peak
  • If you are planning on exploring off the beaten track you might like to read a bit more information regarding 4WD Hire or even a 4WD Camper

2.       Freedom camps

  • Australia is full of freedom camps, which are either free or low cost camping.  They vary from beautiful locations to roadside rest areas which allow 24 hour stopping.

    Motorhomes for Hire

    Motorhomes for Hire

  • You’ll notice from 4pm these popular areas start to fill up, as fellow travellers call it a day and declare it ‘happy hour’
  • Many allow fires, unless signposted otherwise.   Having a bow saw or axe on board the motorhome you hire,  assists when collecting the odd piece of wood during your days travel (illegal to collect wood in a National Park)
  • Spend time speaking with your fellow campers to find out about any hidden ‘gems’ they’ve discovered on their travels – you will meet people going both directions
  • There are map books available which detail where the freedom camps are located to plan your route

3.       Commercial Camps

  • There are plenty of full facility campgrounds throughout Australia, with a higher concentration around popular tourist areas.  Generally there is no need to book unless there is a special event on
  • Many travellers tend to spend every third night or so in a commercial camp  either to catch up on chores like the washing or if driving small distances to charge the ancillary battery
  • There can be some distance between dump station points, so make the most of these points as you come across them.  You’ll also find some ‘RV friendly’ towns have dump points available along with water to fill your tanks
  • Motorhomes for hire have an onboard toilet and shower or you can choose from smaller camper hire, which you may prefer

4.       Distances travelled

  • Once away from the cities, Australia is full of long straight roads which makes for fairly easy driving
  • For some, travelling approx 200km per day is the goal, where for others with time constraints around 500km can be done comfortably when in the outback
  • If possible avoid travelling around sunset or sunrise as this is when the animals are most active
  • When travelling on sealed roads generally the maximum distance between fuel stops is approx 300 km in more remote locations
  • All of the motorhomes for hire can comfortably travel this distance without the need for carrying spare fuel containers

Campervans for Hire to travel amazing locations like the Nullarbor Plain

If you are interested in campervan  hire we can help with quotes and information, or if you’d like to read more travel stories about campervan hire Australia, you may enjoy our article about the Queensland outback.

Even though the Nullarbor is sealed all the way, it is still an epic road trip.  If one of your goals is to travel more of Australia, you most likely have this on your ‘to do’ list.

There are a number of ways to experience the Nullarbor; however using one of the many campervans for hire is best because of the freedom and comforts offered.  Some people living in Australia choose to buy, although using campervans for hire are becoming popular as some find they have spent a ‘small fortune’ on a vehicle which doesn’t meet their needs.  Campervans for hire also offers one way travel which is a great way to utilise the time availableCaravan rentals are also another option, however not so popular for those flying in from another country as a rental car is also required.

Adelaide is an excellent starting point for this adventure, perhaps enjoying the Barossa Valley and the Adelaide Hills.  We have many campervans for hire from here, or you may prefer starting in MelbournePerth is also a great starting point where we also have campervans for hire and travel towards the east, rather than the west.

From Adelaide you’re heading north to Port Augusta, before you start to see your first taste of the vastness of Australia. For lovers of seafood, and if time permits you’ll want to explore the Eyre Peninsula.  If time is precious, Ceduna will be the place to stop to have your fill of oysters – it’s the oyster capital of Australia after all!

Time your visit across the Nullarbor between May to October to enjoy the Southern Right Whales which frequent the Great Australian Bite.  These great mammals are often at the base of the spectacular Banda Cliffs at this time.

At many vantage points, you’ll see where the stunning turquoise ocean meets the dramatic coastline on the SA side of the Nullarbor.  There are also locations to park self contained campervans for the evening.  Perfect for enjoying the sunset and changing colours of the landscape.

The West Australian side of the Nullarbor offers the longest straight in Australia at 146km, however the changing scenery will ensure you won’t get bored.

For golf fanatics, you could play the 18 hole (par 72) Nullarbor Links course. It’s said to be the ‘worlds longest golf course’ and is situated along 1,365 kilometres of the Eyre Highway which passes through the Nullarbor Plain.  We have campervans for hire that have enough room to store your golf clubs if need be.

There are plenty of options as you leave the Nullarbor and head towards Perth. Timing your visit from July to November should have you amazed by the wildflowers regardless of whether you travel the picturesque coastal route or the more direct route via Kalgoorlie. Perth also has many campervans for hire or they can be returned here.

Campervan Hire Australia – visit the Outback of Queensland

Campervan Hire in Australia is perfect to explore the outback of Queensland.

If you’re like many other fellow travellers, you might be wondering what the outback in Australia is really like and can this be explored in a campervan hire or motorhome rental.   There are a few stories about the outback doing the rounds which include things like ’there are no sealed roads’, and ‘the need to take spare containers of fuel’. The great news is that there are plenty of places to explore in the outback where there are sealed roads and enough fuel stops so that you won’t have to worry. It’s the perfect place to travel if you are planning on campervan hire in Australia.

Share in this campervan adventure, which will give you some ideas of where to travel in your campervan hire Australia.  If you are thinking of other travelling routes with campervans for hire, enjoy other informative articles like the one on the Nullarbor Plains or for top tips for travelling Australia with motorhomes for hire.

Leaving the bright lights of Brisbane behind, we headed west towards Roma in our campervan hire, which incidentally has the largest saleyards in Australia. Tuesday and Thursdays are the days to see all the action, however there were still plenty of cattle and trucks coming and going on the other days as well. This trip was all about exploring and staying in some truly beautiful locations. By that I don’t mean five star accommodations, but our campervan with five star views! There are plenty of freedom camps throughout the outback – free or low cost camping. The great thing about these is that most allow campfires, which are perfect for cooking dinner and of course meeting fellow travellers around. We found all of these freedom camps to be perfectly safe.

After a particularly good evening around a campfire just outside of Roma we were greeted with the sign ‘welcome to the outback’. It officially starts 50 km west of Roma, and definitely a sealed road!

We started to see all the ‘icons’ of the outback in Australia as we travelled along in our Campervan hire.  Road trains, long straight roads, the odd farm house and most importantly beautiful scenery were all on offer. The Savannah plains also provided plenty of sightings of wildlife like emus, eagles, kangaroos, wallabies and brolgas (a type of crane).

The first sighting of a road train can be quite daunting for the unprepared traveller. Road trains are an essential part of the outback, a way to move cargo across the long straight roads easily.  If you are planning campervan hire Australia, have a chat to us about information concerning road trains for peace of mind travel.

Our journey took us through Longreach, well known for the Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Qantas Founders Museum on our way to Mt Isa. Longreach is definitely a worthwhile stop over in your campervan hire travelling in Australia.

While the entire drive through the outback is stunning, there was one particular stretch that had everything you could ever ask for. The stretch of road I am talking about is between Winton and Mt Isa, via Middleton and Boulia. The more popular journey is via McKinlay and the Walkabout Creek Hotel, however I found the Boulia route to be far more picturesque. The road is sealed, so perfect if you are hiring a campervan or motorhome. It’s a little quieter too, which means a much greater chance of seeing wildlife.

Campervan Hire Australia - explore the Queensland Outback

Campervan Hire Australia - explore the Queensland Outback

We stopped so many times to take photographs on what seemed like every corner. Emus were at the edge of the road to give us a nod as we passed by. Eagles enjoyed their tucker on the road edges. Kangaroos posed for photographs before dashing off into the bush.

People often think of the outback as flat dry grass, but that’s not really true, which you will discover as you travel in your campervan hire in Australia.  In this area, the dirt was a brilliant red colour and there were plenty of Spinifex grasses. However along this stretch of road we came across Mesa’s, or ‘jump ups’ as they are known. These are flat topped hills that rise out of the flat land. Around sunrise and sunset the colours of the landscape are really too beautiful for words.

A worthy stop along this route is the Middleton Hotel, which was once a staging post for the old Cobb and Co coaches. The publicans Les and Val will definitely make you feel welcome and share a yarn or two. They serve food and cold beers, which is perfect after a day of wildlife spotting. Across the road from the pub was a great place to freedom camp with your motorhome or campervan – it’s known as the ‘Hilton Hotel’. A little joke by Les, but he welcomes anyone to stop for the night. We had an excellent night at the Middleton Hotel chatting with the locals. Apparently it is no big deal for a landowner to have a million odd acres – nearly fell of my stool when he said that!

We really enjoyed this outback trip and getting amongst the locals who are only too happy to share tales of their own adventures. Being able to have a camp fire nearly every evening while travelling through the outback also made for some tasty tucker. While the roasts were excellent, I enjoyed the pizza we made in the camp oven. Did I mention we made the base as well?

These days there is really nothing stopping anyone from having their own adventure in the Australian outback and campervan hire or motorhome rental is the perfect way to do it. Enjoy either on your own, or join us on a campervan tour to many locations in Australia.

Have a read of our blog post about caravan rentals for more information on this topic.  The article of campervan hire cairns and locations to explore nearby will also be of interest to you.  If you are concerned about ‘roughing it’ our article on campervan rental and how you really don’t need to rough it, will assist in your comfort for this type of holiday.

Camping without Roughing it; try Campervan Rental

Are your friends always telling you about their latest holiday?  They sound so good, but you won’t join them as it involves camping.  That was before you found out about campervan rental.

We have lots of information about campervan hire or motorhome rental on our website, or speak to us for a campervan hire or motorhome rental quote today.

Share in a first time campervan rental experience.

No longer are stories of dinners cooked in the camp fire while sharing a nice bottle of red only something imagined, now we know about campervan rental.  And talk of a night sky so clear, you can see why it is called the Milky Way has me there, without ‘roughing it’

Recently we had our first campervan rental experience, which saw us heading away for a couple of weeks to explore the outback of Queensland.

Staying on the ground really did not appeal, but we really wanted to be a part of this adventure.  Campervan rental was something we’d spoken about, but when our friends asked us to join them on their adventure, it was time to make it a reality.

We chose a campervan rental with a toilet and shower on board, to make life that little bit easier.  To my surprise it was set up like an apartment, with wheels.

The day finally arrived and it was time to leave Brisbane for our two week adventure with our campervan rental.  We’d only been as far as Roma before so it wasn’t long before we were experiencing new places.  I was really surprised by the scenery – it wasn’t just openness, but plenty of towns, some rolling hills, trees, and the many icons of the outback.  We were pretty excited by the road trains and enjoyed chatting with the locals in the towns.

The wildlife was also spectacular.  There were kangaroos sharing our camps, and sometimes even a kookaburra would have a laugh at us.  The odd emu gave us a nod and eagles flew over head or sat perched in a tree awaiting their next meal.  My favourite though were the Brolga’s – these cranes have fantastic dances and were happy to put on a show for us tourists with our campervan rental.

spotting dancing brolgas from our campervan rental

spotting dancing brolgas from our campervan rental

Looking back though, the most memorable part of the trip, apart from the journey itself, was the locations where we stayed in our campervan rental.  We camped mostly in bush camps, near a river, on farmland or sometimes just in designated bush areas.  In the evenings we looked forward to a camp fire, that our friends would have going in no time.  Most days we’d be parked up early and enjoy ‘happy hour’ which generally was a fair bit longer than an hour!

We were so happy we joined our friends on this ‘camping’ holiday, even if we were doing it in style with a camper hire.  It was excellent that we were able to enjoy the best of both worlds by taking a campervan hire – something we’ll definitely do again!

Caravan Rentals versus Camper Hire

Before heading out to explore the great country of Australia, a decision needs to  be made as to the type of vehicle you wish to hire.  Options include caravan rentals or a camper hireCampervan hire or motorhome rental can be further broken into one with an onboard toilet/shower or without.

Caravan Rentals

When flying into Australia, or departing from a city that is not your own, then caravan rentals are not really an option for you.  The reason for this is not only do you need to consider renting a caravan, but you would also need to hire a car.  This can push the cost up significantly.  Many rental vehicles do not come with a tow ball, so only premium vehicles could be considered.  A ‘caravan’ is towed behind a car for those that are not sure of the difference.  At Gallivanting Oz from April 2011 we will have a 4WD vehicle and caravan set up available for our international guests, or locals are able to rent a caravan that suits your needs.

A benefit of caravan rentals if you are departing and returning to the city you live in, and are planning on using your own personal car is the ability to leave the caravan at your evenings camping location.  Unhitching the caravan is fairly easy allowing you to drive into nearby towns.  This is fine if you are camping in commercial camps, however not everyone is comfortable to do this when freedom camping in a remote location.  Although, realistically, you may not want to explore anywhere else since you are probably in a beautiful location already!

Campervan Hire or Motorhome Rental

Flying in from another city and planning to explore Australia it is popular to hire a campervan or motorhome rather than caravan rentals.  Having your transport, bed, kitchen and most likely a toilet/shower with you all the time, really does make for an easy holiday.  There is no need to plan exactly how many kilometres you must travel each day to ensure you have a bed at the end of the day as it is with you at all times.

For those that are departing from and returning to the city they live in, there really is the dilema whether to consider caravan rentals or camper hire.  Each has their pro’s and con’s and can end up being a personal choice, and sometimes it really comes down to where you are planning on travelling and what you are doing along the way.

If you are continually on the move, for example looking to explore the outback of Queensland for a few weeks, stopping in many beautiful freedom camps and a few commercial camps in the main towns a campervan or motorhome hire would suit you perfectly.  Most towns are easily set up for motorhomes and parking is generally a breeze if you choose to rent a larger motorhome.  Another benefit of motorhome rentals is when exploring a ’side road’ which turns out to be spectacular, and you wish to travel further along the road than initially planned, there is no need to double track – you have everything with you so exploring is very easy

When considering caravan rentals, you must also factor in the wear and tear on your own personal vehicle to the cost if you are a local.  There are many different types of caravan rentals with some quite large.  Is your vehicle powerful enough to tow the weight?

Caravan rentals may be the best option for you if planning on driving to one destination and basing yourself there for a few weeks.  You may find that having your car, especially if it is a 4WD allows you to find that perfect fishing spot, or it is easy to pop into the nearby town for fresh milk and bread.

As you can see there are many pros and cons for each.  The team at Gallivanting Oz have travelled in both and are happy to discuss options with you for your next best trip.  If you would like to speak with us or find out more about Campervan or Motorhome Hire either request a campervan hire or motorhome rental quote, or send us an email.  We look forward to speaking with you and are happy to call you at a preferred time.
