Camping Options

Freedom Camping

There are a variety of different camping options when travelling in your motorhome, however can be broken into two main groups:

  1. Freedom Camping
  2. Commercial Camping

Freedom Camping

What is it?

Freedom camping simply means you are staying in a free or low cost camping location, away from the usual ‘commercial campgrounds’. They can be in idyllic locations like beside a river, sea or nestled in the bush or could simply be roadside rest areas.

Whichever kind of freedom camp you choose to stay in, it certainly adds to the adventure you are having. You can pick and choose where you stay – you’ll find these nights are probably the most memorable of your holiday as you’ll really be experiencing Australia. The characters and stories you hear around the camp fire will ensure you are still laughing the next day!

Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find answers to some frequently asked questions. Contact us if you require any other information

Do they have facilities?
Because of the remote locations of these camps, there are often limited facilities. When choosing to stay in freedom camps it is best to choose a motorhome with a built in toilet/shower or consider hiring our Galli Ensuite, so you are self sufficient.

The Galli Ensuite works perfectly when hiring a 4WD camper or smaller campervan, as it provides you with a portable dry toilet, shower and privacy tent. This means you will leave no trace on the picturesque locations that you are staying, and ensure they remain beautiful. Of course there is the comfort factor to think about as well!

There won’t be any power, but that’s ok as the campervans and motorhomes have two batteries – one purely for the comforts of your campervan so you’ll be able to start the van the next day. Cooking is on gas, so that won’t be a problem, and charging cameras and laptops uses the inverter which plugs into your cigarette lighter while driving. It’s too easy.
Why stay there?
Apart from the beautiful locations that many of these camps are situated at, they are more relaxed and often you can have campfires. They are generally well away from built up areas so perfect for a bit of star gazing too. You’ll find people are very friendly at these camps, so the best way to do research for your next day’s adventure.

The camps may also be as simple as a roadside rest area which allows overnight stays. This is perfect as some days you’ll find when exploring Australia there are large distances to drive between popular tourist destinations. There’s plenty of changing scenery to keep you interested though – and these freedom camps are also great places for lunch breaks, because after all you have your kitchen on board.
Are they Safe?
Yes, we’ve found these to be just as safe as commercial campgrounds. Occasionally you might have a noisy neighbour, but that is no different to a commercial campground. The great thing about freedom camping is that you can pick the ‘spot’ of your choosing.
How do we find them?
Some are easy to find, but plenty are hidden gems.

Because of this, and for your peace of mind, for selected motorhome hires of 21 days or more, we’ll provide you with a Camps Australia Wide guide for free! This details the locality and facilities at thousands of freedom camps, complete with map book. This gift is worth AUD$60, but we’re giving it to you free – to thank you for doing business with us.  For other motorhome hires, you are welcome to purchase the book from us.

If you’re still on the road at 4pm, you’ll probably spot a few freedom camps as well. Generally travellers have parked up by then, and are enjoying a ‘happy hour’ beverage and getting to know fellow travellers.

Camp Fire

Can you picture sitting around a campfire, listening to the sizzle of your dinner cooking on the embers, relaxing and sharing tales of your day’s adventure? Sounds like heaven to us!

Commercial Campgrounds

You'll find many commercial camps all over Australia and these are well sign posted from the highway.  Generally there is no need to book if you are staying in a commercial camp, unless you are travelling at a peak period like Christmas and plan on staying in one spot for a few days.  In that case, it may be a good idea to book to avoid disappointment.

You'll find inside many of the vehicles we hire, there will be discount vouchers for specific chains of commercial campgrounds to ensure your holiday savings go further.
