Queensland Adventure - Own Van

Tour Overview

We're going to head inland first, making our way from the buzz of 'Brisvegas' to Longreach and into the heart of the outback with ever changing landscape and on to wide-open plains dotted with historic towns.  Longreach is well known for the Stockman's Hall of Fame, Outback Heritage Centre and the Qantas Founders Museum.

On our way to Mt Isa, we continue through some fascinating scenery where you may even see a wild camel or two! The popular Underground Mine Tour at Mt Isa will give you a taste of what underground mining is really like.

We're off towards the coast now leaving the outback and odd billabong behind, where we check out the lava tubes at Undara National Park which we think are excellent.  We’ve included a 2 hour guided tour which is an excellent concentrated visit to the lava tubes, as well as seeing other interesting environmental, geological and historical features.

There'll definitely be plenty of camera stops as we head across the Atherton Tablelands which is the site of Australia's most recent volcanic activity some 10,000 years ago.  We'll be treated to spectacular scenery as we explore the area including waterfalls and lakes before we head to the tropical green of the coastal belt.

We'll have plenty of time in Cairns for you to have the opportunity to experience a cruise to the Great Barrier Reef if you like, where you can snorkel or view by submarine the coral and fish wonderland.  Cairns isn't all about the reef though, you could have the option of heading north to Cape Tribulation or jump aboard the Kuranda Scenic Railway to explore the markets and return via Skyrail over the tropical rainforest which you can also wander through.  If you prefer there's the opportunity to explore the 4WD Bloomfield Track from Cape Tribulation to Cooktown as an optional extra while we are exploring Cairns - if this interests you, please let us know prior to departure to avoid disappointment.

Heading down the coast, Townsville is next.  Included in the tour is a return ferry to Magnetic Island which has a delightful blend of untouched National Park, and a resident population of about 2,500.  Although it's in the Tropics, the Townsville area is in a rain shadow which makes it the sunniest city on the Queensland coast - so with Magnetic Island averaging over 320 days of sunshine per year, we're hoping for a fine day!  There are plenty of walking tracks with spectacular lookouts, and also the National Park is a haven for wildlife like rock wallabies, possums, koalas and a variety of birdlife.  You might like to hire a mini moke for the day while we are at Magnetic Island which is a fun way to explore, or there are buses if you prefer.

We continuing heading south through Bowen as we make our way to the famous Whitsunday Islands.  There's a variety of options for you to choose from here as you explore this aquatic paradise of tropical islands, or you might prefer one of the many walks on the mainland to vantage points which will provide the most stunning photographs.

As we meander our way back towards Brisbane, we'll check out a few of the coastal nooks and crannies including Agnes Waters and 1770.  We will enjoy a sunset tour on an amphibious vehicle for a fun time in 1770.

Hervey Bay is also on the agenda, which is our departure point for our 4WD tour of the largest sand island in the world.  Fraser Island really is beautiful with a mixture of tropical rain forest and idyllic lakes; it will be something to remember.

It's then a gentle stroll back to Brisbane, checking out the spectacular Noosa National Park and the Glasshouse Mountains before it's time to hand back the campervans and say goodbye. The tour will conclude early afternoon in Brisbane on Friday, to allow enough time to return the vehicles, and assist with your onward travel plans.

We’re also happy to assist with any accommodation, information or tours in the Brisbane area following this tour.
