Many people thing that Uluru will be the main reason for doing this trip, and yes, that is an amazing highlight, however you will find there are many others. Around the Red Centre, there are plenty of areas you can explore in a 2WD motorhome hire on a sealed road. You have Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) nearby plus detour to Kings Canyon for spectacular scenery. You won’t want to miss spending some time in the MacDonnell Ranges exploring canyons, gorges and gaps while relaxing at night time in some amazing camping locations enjoying the benefits of your self contained camper.
There is a lot to explore around the top end in the Northern Territory too – the world heritage listed Kakadu National Park will be a highlight. Nearby Litchfield National Parks is one of our favourites, offering swimming areas in the ‘dry season’. Mataranka is popular with many travellers as they relax in the thermal springs. You won’t want to miss a night at the Daly Waters Pub – an iconic outback pub with an adjacent campground. We have a more specific video on travelling around the Top End from Darwin in a self drive camper taking in the many highlights, which you may also find interesting and helpful.
