Thinking about visiting Canberra in your motorhome?
It’s easy, pick up your motorhome of choice in Sydney and set out on your way!
With its ideal placement amid a set of valleys and bordered by the Brindabella Ranges on the west, Canberra is an inspiring place to visit. The destination’s natural attractions make it perfect for camper excursions while Canberra’s extensive and intriguing past is a draw for history enthusiasts. National museums, botanical gardens and child-friendly attractions give travellers a few more reasons to visit.
Where to Camp
For location convenience, make camping reservations at Exhibition Park. Trees surround the camping area, and it features a number of grassy spots. Since Exhibition Park is positioned on the corner of Flemington Road and the Federal Highway, you’ll be close to intriguing attractions like the National Gallery of Canberra and the National Museum.
If you’re visiting the area on a tight travel budget or prefer to be in a relaxing area, then be sure to stay at Cotter Campground (unpowered only). Its location is near the Cotter River, so diverse natural elements are nearby. Check out more campsites on the Visit Canberra website.
For another option that is a bit more remote, consider staying at one of Canberra’s favourite camping spots such as the Old Kowen Homestead Recreation Area. By selecting this campground, you’ll have accommodations within a tranquil forest. You’ll also have access to picnic tables and barbeques. The Old Kowen campground is pretty and quiet, but it is also isolated, so you will have to drive to reach the region’s sightseeing places.
Out and About
Begin your Canberra trip at the National Capital Exhibition. While there, plan to hike part of the 150-kilometre Centenary Trail. This long trek will take you through popular sightseeing spots like the Australian War Memorial and the National Arboretum.
The best way to tour Canberra is under your own steam. For instance, hop on a bike, lace up your running shoes or strap on your hiking sandals to explore nature created sites like Yerrabi Pond or Burley Griffin Lake. Along the way, you can rest on benches and quench your thirst from conveniently placed drinking fountains.
A Peek at the Past
The indigenous Nguannawal people were Canberra’s first residents. During the 1830s, European settlers moved into the region. Canberra became the federal capital in 1908. A few years later, an American architect named Walter Burley Griffin developed the city’s current design, which features a blend of nature and urban living spaces.
The Gubur Dhaura complex includes heritage values from early Aboriginal and European settlers. At the site, you’ll have the chance to see old clay mining pits, iron mining exploration spots and remains of the Old Well Station track. If you have a passion for history and architecture, then stop by the Parliament House. Tours are provided every 30 minutes, and as you stroll along with your guide, the site’s stunning landscapes are likely to wind up on your smartphone’s camera roll.
Canberra demonstrates the spirit of Australia with its visually stunning terrain, preservation of the Ngunnawal people’s history and classic Australian climate. Canberra is frequently referred to as the “Bush Capital” since the city started as a major community for a group of the country’s native people. Today, you can park your camper in one of the region’s campgrounds to tour Canberra at your leisure.
