Road Kill - one less locust

July 10, 2010

Road kill is tragic, however in the outback is fairly commonplace.  Generally animals are hit by the larger vehicles like road trains as the independent traveller like those hiring campervans and motorhomes tend to travel a little slower, less likely to be on the road at the around sunrise/sunset, and can slow down more easily that these large vehicles.  The road kill does provide food for a number of scavengers and birds like eagles.

When travelling, there are some ‘unique road kills’, however we thought this one was more ‘cartoon like’ than tragic.  We travelled through a swarm of locusts, just north of Cloncurry in Inland, Nthn Queensland.  Locusts do plenty of damage to crops which is why there wasn’t a lot of love lost with this one.
